From Clay to Table —
Every Step by Hand.

Ceramic tableware doesn't happen quickly. Each piece passes through multiple careful stages — from raw clay to finished form. Here's how it works.

Clay Preparation

The process begins with raw clay that is carefully wedged and worked to remove air pockets and achieve a consistent, workable texture. Proper preparation at this stage ensures the structural integrity of every piece that follows.

Shaping & Forming

Each piece is shaped by hand — thrown on the wheel or hand-built using traditional forming techniques. This stage is where the character of a piece is established. Subtle variations in form, rim, and wall thickness are natural qualities of handmade work.

Controlled Drying

After forming, pieces are set aside to dry slowly and evenly. Controlled drying prevents cracking and warping, allowing the clay to shrink uniformly as moisture leaves the piece. This stage can take several days depending on the size and thickness of each form.

Bisque Firing

Once fully dried, pieces undergo their first kiln firing — called bisque firing. This firing transforms the raw, fragile clay into a durable ceramic material. The bisque stage prepares the surface to accept glaze in the next step.

Glazing

Each bisque-fired piece is glazed by hand. Glaze gives ceramic tableware its color, surface texture, and protective finish. The application process — whether dipped, brushed, or poured — contributes to the unique character of every finished piece.

Final Firing

The glazed pieces are loaded into the kiln for a second, higher-temperature firing. This final firing fuses the glaze permanently to the ceramic surface, completing the transformation from raw clay to finished tableware.

Inspection & Finishing

After the final firing, each piece is inspected and finished. Bases are smoothed where needed. Only pieces that meet our quality standards are considered complete. This final review is the last step before a piece is ready.
